What to expect when you submit, from first submission through to a permanent, citable article of record.
Choosing a journal
Each journal states its own scope and article types on its site. Read the scope first — the most common reason for a desk rejection is a manuscript that is sound but simply outside what that journal covers.
If you are unsure which journal fits, write to the editorial office and ask before you submit.
Peer review
Submissions are first checked by the editorial office for scope, completeness and research-integrity requirements. Manuscripts that pass are assigned to an editor and sent for independent peer review.
Reviewers advise; the editor decides. You will receive the reviewers’ comments with the decision, whatever that decision is.
After acceptance
Accepted manuscripts are copy-edited and typeset, and you will receive proofs to approve before publication. Once published, the article receives a registered DOI and a permanent URL, and appears in that journal’s current issue and feeds.
Articles may appear online ahead of their issue. An article published ahead of issue is the version of record and is fully citable by its DOI.
Your rights
Authors retain copyright. Each article carries an explicit licence, stated on the article itself, that tells readers what they may do with it.
If you find an error in your published article, contact the editorial office. Corrections are published as a versioned update with the change recorded, rather than by quietly editing the original.
